The president of Ethiopia‘s Amhara region and his top adviser were killed in an attempted coup in which the country’s army chief was also shot dead, the office of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said.
Spokeswoman Billene Seyoum told journalists a “hit squad” led by Amhara’s security chief Asaminew Tsige burst into a meeting in the state offices of Amhara’s capital, Bahir Dar, on Saturday and shot regional government President Ambachew Mekonnen and his adviser Ezez Wassie.
The men were “gravely injured in the attack and later died of their wounds,” she said.
“Several hours later, in what seems like a coordinated attack, the chief of the staff of the national security forces Seare Mekonnen was killed in his home by his bodyguard in Addis Ababa.”
Also shot dead was a retired general who had been visiting him, Billene added.
The bodyguard has been apprehended while Asaminew is still on the loose, sources said.
Al Jazeera’s Leah Harding, reporting from Addis Ababa, said Abiy called those responsible “mercenaries”.
“The army intelligence general said the coup was meant to create chaos and division in the military. He said the military now has control over the situation … and he reiterated that there are no divisions within the military,” Harding reported.
“This is particularly important because the two generals that were killed in Addis Ababa are part of the Tigre ethnic group, and the person who we believe is responsible for the coup plot is part of the Amhara group.”
Analysts said the incident showed the seriousness of the political crisis in Ethiopia, where efforts by Abiy to loosen the iron-fisted grip of his predecessors and push through reforms have unleashed a wave of unrest.
“These tragic incidents, unfortunately, demonstrate the depth of Ethiopia’s political crisis,” said International Crisis Group analyst William Davison.
“It is now critical that actors across the country do not worsen the instability by reacting violently or trying to exploit this unfolding situation for their own political ends,” the expert said.

Early on Sunday, Brigadier General Tefera Mamo, the head of special forces in Amhara, told state television that “most of the people who attempted the coup have been arrested, although there are a few still at large.”
Since coming to power last year, Abiy has tried to spearhead political reforms to open up the once isolated, security-obsessed Horn of Africa country of 100 million people.
He has released political prisoners, lifted bans on political parties and prosecuted officials accused of gross human rights abuses, but his government is battling mounting violence.
Ethnic bloodshed – long held in check by the state’s iron grip – has flared up in many areas, including Amhara, where the regional government was led by Ambachew Mekonnen.
“Since Abiy Ahmed took power and the country moved towards democratisation … there have been different forms of mobilisations, by different actors, particularly nationalists.” Awol Allo, a lecturer in law at Keele University, told Al Jazeera.
“[In] Amhara regional state, there is this feeling that they were marginalised, and these individuals that were suspected to be behind the coup recently said that Amhara people have never been subordinated.. so there is this sense of grievance and victimhood that is driving the nationalist movements,” he added.

“አዎ መፈንቅለ መንግስቱ በእቅድ በዝግጅት በቅንጅት የተመራ ነበር ። (ይነበብ)
የመፈንቅለ መንግሱ ሴራ የተጀመረው ከስባት ወር በፊተ ነበር ። ነገሩ እንዲህ ነው በብዙ መስዋትነት የተገኘውን ለውጥ ፅንፍ የረገጡ የአማራ ብሄርተኞች በፈለጉት መንገድ ለማስኬድ የተለያዩ ሙከራዎችን ሲያደርጉ ቢቆዩም እንዳሰቡት ሊሳካላቸው አልቻለም ። በአብይ ተስፍ የቆረጡት እነዚህ ፅንፈኛ ቡድኖች በምን መልኩ መንግስትን ማዳከምና መገልበጥ እንደሚቻል ማስላትና መምከር ጀመሩ ።
በውስጥም በውጭም የነሱን አይነት አመለካከት ያለውን ግለሰብም ሆነ ቡድን ማሰባሰብ እና ማደራጀት ጀመሩ ። ለዚህ ድብቅ ሴራ ግንባር ቀደም አስተባባሪ የሆነው እና ከዚህ በፊት መንግስትን የመገልበጥ ተሞክሮ ያለውን አሳምነው ፁጌን በዋናነት ሴራውን እንዲያሳልጥ ተስማሙ። አሳምነው ፅጌ ካለው ስልጣን አኳያ ህጋዊ ሽፍን በመስጠት ውስጥ ውስጡን የማደራጀቱን ድርሻ እንዲወጣ በአደራ ጭምር የተሰጠውን ተልኮ ተቀበለ ።
አንድ አመት ገደማ በቀረውን ህጋዊ ምርጫ ላይ ተወዳድረው ማሸነፍ እንደማይችሉ ያወቁት እነዚህ ቡድኖች እጅግ ብዙ የህዝብ ድጋፍ ያለውን የአብይን አስተዳደር በቀላሉ በሃይል መደምሰስ እንደማይቻልም በደንብ ገብቷቸዋል ። ስለዚህም በቅድሚያ መንግስትን እረፍት መንሳት፣ እዛም እዚህም ብጥብጥ መፍጠር፣ የመንግስትን መልካም ተግባር ማጣጣል፣ እንከኖችን እየፈለጉ አጉልቶ ማወራት፣ ለውጡ በኦሮሞ ብሄርተኞች የተጠለፈ በማስመሰል ህዝቡ ውስጥ ጥርጣሪ እንዲያድር የማድረግ እናም ሰው ሌላ አማራጭ እንዲመለከት የማድረግ ሰፊ ስራ በመስራት መርዛቸውን በስፍት ረጩ።
እነዚህ ለውጡን የሚቃወሙ ቡድኖች የሚያራምዱት አማራ ተጨቁኗል ተገፍቷል የሚለው የውሸት ትርክት የቡድኑ ክንፍ በሆነው “አብን” ስር ፅንፈኛ ብሄርተኞችን በቀላሉ እንዲሰባሰቡ ማድረግ ተቻለ ። የስብስቡ ሰንሰለት ከአገርቤት እስ ውጭ አገር የረዘመና የተቀናጀ ነው። ባልደራስ በሚል ራሱን የሚጠራው እና አንዳንድ የማህበረ ቁድሳን አመራሮችም የዚህ ሰንሰለት አካል ናቸው።
በውጭም ባገር ውስጥም የሚዲያ ተቋም ገነቡ በውስጥ አስራት የሚባለው ሲሆን በውጭ ደግሞ በኤድሚያስ ለገሰ የሚመራው ኢትዮ 360 ያሉት አሁን ከኢሳት ተገንጥሎ የወጣው አንጃ መሆኑ ነው ። በተጨማሪ ኦሮሞ አይመራም ከቤተመንግስት ሊወጣ ይገባል የሚል ድብቅ አቋም የሚያራምዱ ሙህራን፣ አክቲቪስቶችን እና ጋዜጠኞችን በመንግስት ሚዲያዎች ሳይቀር በነፃ ውይይት ሽፍን የለውጥ ሃይሉ ላይ የፅእኖ እንዲፈጥሩ ተልእኮ ወሰዱ።
ሳምንታዊ ጋዜጦች እና መፀሄቶችም በአምዶቻቸው ላይ ሰፊ የማዳከም እና የማደናገር ስራ ሲሰሩ ሰነበቱ ።በተለይ ባለተራው የኦነግ መንግስት፣ ኢስላም አንጋሹ መንግስት የሚሉና ሌሎች የውሸት መረጃዎች ለህዝብ በማቅረብ ህዝቡ የአብይን አስተዳደር በጥርጣሬ አይን እንዲመለከት አልያም እንዲጠየፍ የማድረግ ተግባር ሲያሰሩ ሰነበቱ ።
ጊዜውን ጠብቆ ጄኔራል አሳምነው ፅጌ ክልሉን የማተረማመስ ስራውን በይፍ ጀመረ ፣ወልቃይት፣ ጎንደር፣ አጣዪ፣ ወሎ ከሚሴ፣ ቢኒሻንጉል ጉሙዝን ጨምሮ ሌሎች አጎራባች ከተሞችን ሳይቀር ማመስ ጀመረ ። በራሱ ፍላጎት የማንንም ትእዛዝ ሳይጠብቅ ልዩ ሃይሉን በማሰማራት ከአማራ ውጪ በሆኑ ብሄሮች ላይ የጅምላ ጭፍጨፍ አካሄደ ።(ወሎ ከሚሴ እና ጉሙዝ ይጠቀሳሉ) አሁን ሁሉም ነገር ከቁጥጥር ወጣ። የአማራ ክልል ማእከላዊ ኮሚቴ የአብይ ደጋፊ (ለውጡን ማስቀጠል የሚፈልጉ) እና ተቃዋሚ ፀረ ለውጥ ሃይሎች በሚል ውስጥ ውስጡን ለሁለት ተከፈሉ።
በክልሉ አመራሮች መካከል ያለው ልዩነት እየተካረረ መጣ በተለይ የአሳምነው ፅጌ ቡድን ያለ ዶ/ር አንባቸው እውቅና በራሱ ፍላጎት ብዙ ነገሮችን መስራት ጀመረ ። ይህ ልዩ ሃይልን አሰልጥኖ እስከ ማስመረቅ የሚዘልቅ ነው ። ክልሉ በአሳምነው ፅጌን ምንም አይነት መግለጨ ለየትኛውም ሚዲያ እንዳይሰጥ የሚል ጊዜያዊ ማእቀብ ጣለበት ። ምክንያቱም ክልሉ ያልመከረባቸውን ፀብ የሚያጭሩ መግለጫዎችን በተደጋጋሚ በመስጠት ብዙ ውዝግብ ሲያስነሳ ስለቆየ።
በመጨረሻም ይህ ቡድን ጀኔራል አሳምነው ፁጌ ምናልባች አሁን በሚደረገው ግምገማ ከስልጠሰን ሊነሳ ይችል የሚል ግምት ስላደረባቸው ላለፍት ሰባት ወራት የተዘጋጀበትን እቅድ ወደመተግበሩ ለመሸጋገር ወሰኑ ።
መፈንቅለ መንግስቱ እንዴት ይካሄዳል ?
በአንድ ቀን የሚገደሉ ያገሪቱን ዋና ዋና ባለስልጣኖች ላይ ቅጥረኛ አባሎቻቸውን አዘጋጁ ፣ ከነዚህ መካከል ጠቅላይ ሚኒስተር ዶ/ር አብይ አህመድ ፣ ታከለ ኡማ፣ የኦሮሚያ ክልል ኘሬዝዳንት፣ ጀግናው ሰአረ መኮነን ፣ የፖሊስ ኮሚሽነርን ጨምሮ ሌሎች ዋና ዋና ባለስልጣናትን ባንድ ቀን ውስጥ ቀድመው በተዘጋጁት ቅጥረኛ ሰዎች ማስገደል ።
ከዛም በጦሩ መካከል ክፍፍል እንዲፈጠር መሞከር።
ለእቅዳቸው እንቅፍት ይሆናሉ የተባሉትን የአማራ ክልል ባለስልጣናትን በመግደል ምክር ቤቱን ጨምሮ ለመፈንቅለ መንግስቱ ይረዳልናል ያሉትን ወሳኝ መስሪያ ቤቶችን በመቆጣጠር ። ከ ባህር ዳር እስከ ፌደራል በተዘረጋው የገዳዪች መረብ አገሩ መተራመስ ሲጀምር በአማራ ቲቪ ቀርበው የሽግግር መንግስት ባስቸኳይ እንዲቋቋም ማወጅ ለአገር ቤትም ለውጭም ሚዲያዎች መግለጫ መስጠት።
የውጭ አገር መንግስታት ጣልቃ እንዲገቡ መጠየቅ።
ይህንን ሂደት የሚያስተጋቡ የሚያራግቡ ቀድመው ያደራጁትን በውስጥም በውጭም አገር ያሉ ሚዲያዎችን መጠቀም ነበር እቅዳቸው ።የሞተው ሞቶ እነሱ እቅዳቸው ከግብ ማድረስ ። ከዚህ አንፃር አዲስ አበባ መሄድ ሳይጠበቅባቸው ቤተመንግስትን ሳይቆጣጠሩ፣ ኢ ቲቪን መያዝ ሳያስፈልግ ፣ ወታደሩ ጋር ሳይቷከሱ ፣ መሪዎችን በመግደል እና ባገሪቱ ላይ ከፍተኛ ትርምስ በመፍጠር ባህር ዳር ቁጭ ብለው መፈንቅለ መንግስት ለማድረግ የተጠና የተቀናጀ ዝግጅት አድርገው ነበር።
ለመፈንቅለ መንግሰቱ የተመረጠው ቀን ደግሞ ሰኔ 16 አብይ የመጀመሪያው የግድያ ሙከራ የተደረገበት ቀን ሲሆን ለዚህ ተልኮ ስኬት ለውጭ ሚዲያ መግለጫ ለመስጠት የባልደራሱ መሪ ነኝ ባይ ባህር ዳር እንዲገኝ ተደረጓል ። በየቦታው ያለው ቅጥረኛ የተሰጠውን ትእዛዝ መፈፀም ጀመረ፣ አሳምነው ፅጌን የሚመራው ቡድን ባህር ዳር ላይ ተልኮውን ፈፀመ ፅህፈት ቤቱንም ለመቆጣጠር ሞከረ ነገር ግን የአዲስ አበባው ቡድን ኢታማዦር ሹሙን (ሳእረ መኮነንን) እንደገደ በሆነ ተአምር ሰንሰለቱ ተበጠሰበት።
አዎን ከዛ በላይ መሄድ አልቻለም ፈጣን የሆነ መብረቅ በያሉበት ቦታ ሁሉ ወረደባቸው።
አሳምነው ፅጌ በቅርብ አሰልጥኖ ያዘጋጃቸውን ልዩ ሃይሎች በሶስት ጭነት መኪና አምጥቶ ቢያፈሳቸውም እንደታሰቡት አልሆኑም ። የተወሰኑ ከፍተኛ አመራሮችን ( ጓዶቻቸውን) በጭካኔ ከበሉ ቦሃላ አከባቢውን ለቀው እንዲወጡ አሳምነው ፅጌ አዘዘ ። አሳምነው የአዲስ አበባው ሰንሰለት መበጠሱን ሲያውቅ ፈረጠጠ ። ከተማው መናጥ ጀመረ ከተወሰነ ሰአታት ቦሃላ በአውሮኘላን ጭምር በረው በመጡ የፌደራል ሃይሎች ሙሉ በሙሉ ባህር ዳርን ተቆጣጠሩ።
እናም አዎን እውነት ነው መፈንቅለ መንግስቱ በእቅድ በዝግጅት በቅንጅት የተመራ ነበር ። አምላክ ( አሏህ) ኢትዪጵያን ስለሚወድ ከሸፈ። (ጂኒው ወደ ጠርሙሱ ተመለሰ) በመጨረሻም ለሞቱት ወገኖች ነብስ ይማር ለቤተሰቦቻቸው ለወዳጅ ዘመዶቻቸው በሙሉ መፁናናትን ይስጥልን።
ይህ ፅንፈኛ ቡድን አንድ ያልተረዳው ነገር ቢኖር ከዚህ ቦሃላ በምንም ተአምር በምርጫ ካልተሸነፈ በቀር ኦሮሞ በጉልበት ቤተ መንግስትን ለቆ አይወጣም ።

For as long as you uphold the value of superiority of one group over the other, you will continue to bleed as a society.
For as long as you ride the delusion that you will restore your forefathers’ glory (the glory that never was), you will experience this madness that consumed your own leaders as a society.
For as long as you reject the principle of equality in order to deny the humanity of your neighbors (just because they are anything but Amhara), your brightest and best will continue to be consumed by hatred that knows no bounds.
For as long as you seek the preservation of (unfairly gained historic) privilege by, among others, denouncing the legitimate demands (of the oppressed others) for equality, and as long as, you continue to ‘struggle’ for your group’s superiority in the country, you will continue to live in delusions that will shape the attitude of a generation drowned by a moral blindness and total hatred of their compatriots.
It’s the hatred that dwells comfortably inside of you that will kill you. It’s your inequities that will kill you. It is injustice that consumes you.

A statement issued by a “Security and Justice Task-force” has named the suspect in Saturday’s killing of Army Chief, Gen. Seare Mekonnen & Maj-Gen. Gezai Abera (rtd), as አስር አለቃ (Corporal/Private?) Mesafint Tigabu. He is one of Gen Seare’s security details. The statement said the suspect was “injured by federal security forces and is under arrest.”
The statement issued by the task force, which is comprised of members from the National Defense Force, the Attorney General office, the Federal Police, and the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), and was released via state media, said a total of 212 fully armed security forces were detained in Bahir Dar, the capital of Amhara regional state, and were being investigated.
Ambachew Mekonnen (PhD), President of Amhara regional state, Migbaru Kebede, the Attorney General of Amhara regional state and Azeze Wasse, the regional administration’s public organization advisor, were all shot dead on Saturday in what the government maintains was a failed coup attempt orchestrated by Brig. Gen Asaminew Tsige, a former prisoner who was appointed as the Amhara regional state’s peace and security chief a few months after his release from prison last year. Brig. Gen Asaminew was subsequently killed by government security forces during a shootout on Monday near Bahir Dar.
In addition to the 212 security officers detained in Bahir Dar, 43 people are detained in Addis Abeba & are under investigation, the task-force says, adding that further evidences obtained suggest that subsequent attacks on other high level gov officials were also planned by the same cell led by Maj. Gen. Asaminew. A news report by Wazema Radio, a reliable independent podcast, cited its anonymous sources with knowledge to the matter as saying that the attacks were more coordinated than were anticipated and that military institutions in the capital Addis Abeba were targeted. Without mentioning the names, the report on Wazema also said two more regional state presidents were marked for similar attacks. The editors said they were withholding some of the raw information they have either due to the sensitivity of the matter, or because corroborating witnesses are deceased.
